Talks between the United States and the European Union on transferring airline passengers information and data have broken down, according to EU officials.
Now the US are trying to enforce that any flights into the US from the EU, and that includes the UK, should have data sent to them about its passengers.
This doesn't just include names, but telephone numbers and credit card details. However, the EU has rightfully declared this practice as illegal.
I don't know about you, but I wouldn't feel comfortable knowing that my personal details were being sent to the US.
I understand the need for additional security, particularly with the current terrorist risks, but this seems a little extreme to me.
What would happen if this information became available to others? Identity theft is a major problem today and if this information should be 'leaked', the repercussions could be considerable.
The US are threatening that if this information isn't supplied, the flight will not be allowed to land. However, if the airline does provide the information, they risk prosecution by the EU.
Catch 22 again. No doubt, for commercial reasons, the EU will compromise at the expense of the consumer....AGAIN!
