The Boeing 747 (Jumbo Jet) first rolled out of production 38 years ago.
Now, the average lifespan of an airplane is 30 years. (Would you drive a car that was 30 years old? Mmmmm.....)
Anyway, when it's outlived it's usefulness, they are sent to France for disposal and recycling.
Aircraft contain many toxic substances, and as such, need to be disposed of properly.
Interesting article, but what worries me is that when planes are sent here, any parts that still work are sent away for 're-sale'! What!? So there are possibly parts being used in aircraft that we are flying on that come from planes up to 30 years old.
Worrying thought, don't you think?
