Afghans 'could switch allegiance'

Nato's commander in Afghanistan has said the country's citizens may start supporting the Taleban unless their lives improve in the next six months.

And there lies the problem. If you are going to attempt to overthrow a countries infrastructure, both political and financial, make sure you deliver on the premise that you do this in the name of progress. Unless there's underlying issues that are not privvy to Joe Public?

Why don't we actually buy the opium for use medicinally? Then, the snowball effect would be to reduce the cost of morphine and morphine based products reducing the cost to the health service? I wonder how many millions it is costing for our involvement in the miltary action? I bet it would be cheaper to set up trade links, as opposed to conflict?

Being as the regular 'Joe' relies on spoon fed coverage on the news or in the newspapers, I think they rely on it, because if people realised exactly what was going on in the name of 'progress', I think a radical change in government would have to ensue.

But in a complacent, "f**k you, I'm alright Jack" society, what can you expect?
